Matinee (Joe Dante, 1993)

theFilmsaurus film directory – simple recommendations for good or great films you should see. It’s that simple: no “this versus this,” no “this film is overrated.” If a film appears on one of the following pages, see it.

Some are more urgent than others, which is why, for each year, we’ve extracted a handful of titles that stand head and shoulders above the rest. On each page is gathered a decade’s worth of films, broken down year by year. Each year, then, has two tiers: “Top Tier” represents a group of films you should see, beyond a doubt. The second tier, “Also Essential,” should not be taken as “second best,” as they too are heartily recommended. Many of them are films that (a) lots of people, even cinephiles, are not aware of, or (b) don’t have the critical cache we think they deserve, for whatever reason.
